On January 13, 1999, the community of Baltimore County, Maryland, was struck with a tragedy. Hae Min Lee disappeared after leaving her school parking lot at Woodlawn High School. Her ex boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was prosecuted for Hae's murder, and the overall case started the famous podcast 'Serial,’ by Sarah Koenig. Each new episode of the podcast series, Serial, provides new information about the case. Overtime, Adnan goes back and forth on the border of innocence or guilt. From Serial, it is an important fact that Adnan's entire conviction is based upon an individual named Jay, and his confessions and testimony. Adnan and Jay did not necessarily have a close relationship, and could be referred to as acquaintances. As Jay is constantly being interrogated, subsequently Jay's story changes. A man is told to be tough. A man is told no cry. The idea of manhood has affected the minds of men. Men are being forced to think they are obligated to be tough and shouldn’t show emotions. They are told showing emotions isn’t what a real man does. The idea of manhood has been a continuous problem that has affected not only men, but young boys. Owen Jones, the author of the “How to be a Man” published an article that illustrates how the idea of being a real man in society has become very standardized. He describes how history has taught us that it can’t be changed, and it’s not supposed to change. He describes the problems men are put in, and how these different situations portray how men are obligated to think they are supposed to react in certain ways.

In the book “Refugee” by Alan Gratz, 3 families are struggling to find peace in their native countries. In Nazi Germany a Jewish family is being sent into concentration camps. In Cuba a family is suffering from dangerous riots, and in Syria families are suffering from violence and destruction. Every family is looking for a better life however it is not a walk in the park to get there. Along the way there are many disappointments and challenges that takes every single person in the family to step up, mature and fight to survive. However, with the stress, torture and horrors the parents are given it is the children's turn mature and make decisions that could ultimately decide their future. Sometimes the situation that make you feel like you want to give up bring out the best in you.
